Wednesday, January 14 Cassie and Maggie
Oh how lucky we are. Super sisters Cassie (fiddle) and Maggie (guitar) MacDonald are booked for the Kelowna Folk Roots Music Society just as their wonderful new recording, Gold and Coal, received four nominations for the 2026 Canadian Folk Music Awards. While Maggie’s up for Traditional Singer of the Year, the duo also received a nomination as Ensemble of the Year. But here’s the rub: Gold and Coal earned them recognition for a Horizon Award for pushing the boundaries of folk music as well as Traditional Album of the Year. Clearly this trailblazing Nova Scotia-based duo are something to behold. They will appear at the Unitarian Hall, Kelowna, January 14. As the Calgary Herald succinctly noted: “These two young ladies inhabit the rare air of the greats.”

Irish Mythen’s voice could halt maritime traffic on the St. Lawrence. With a boisterous personality and staggering voice – as big as the social issues highlighted on five remarkable recordings – Irish has toured with the likes of Rod Stewart and Melissa Etheridge and performed in such prestigious venues as Sydney Opera House, Australia, and Glastonbury, UK. A profoundly proud, gay woman, who identifies as they/them/their, with an engaging, impish grin and a natural gift for communicating with an audience, Irish brings that raucous, moving, and often hilarious show to Kelowna, Feb. 13, at the Ukrainian Hall, 1933 Barlee Road. Truly an event not to be missed.
