Juno Award-winning James Keelaghan needs little introduction in these parts. Truly, Rolling Stone magazine simply called him “Canada’s finest songwriter.” And there’s ample evidence amidst a lauded career that now spans over 40 years and a body of work of incalculable importance, either drawing from the folk tradition or inspired by it. There are numerous classic Keelaghan songs – Jenny Bryce, Hillcrest Mines, Kiri’s Piano, Cold Missouri Waters . . . that captivated our sold-out audience a year ago. But where do you start with a snapshot of Jez Lowe’s preposterous career? It spans 20-plus acclaimed albums and numerous songs covered by such legendary artists as Fairport Convention, The Dubliners, and The Tannahill Weavers as well as the new traditionalists The Unthanks, The Young Uns, and Winnipeg’s wonderful Dhuks. While largely a solo artist singing original songs steeped in the coal mining communities of North-East England, Jez also occasionally fronts and records with his band The Bad Pennies and collaborates with the self-explanatory Pitman Poets. A principal writer for the BBC commissioned series The Radio Ballads – inspired by the ground-breaking programmes created by Ewan MacColl and John Leonard in the 1950s and ’60s – Jez also presents the programme Open Country on BBC Radio Four exploring such staples as ghost stories and folklore from Durham, Northumberland, and North Yorkshire. And if that wasn’t enough, he is set to publish his fifth in a series of novels inspired by the folk tradition and social history of these English counties.
James and Jez began their casual partnership touring Australian folk festivals back in 1997. Based on a mutual respect for each others' songwriting abilities and musical talents, they have since performed together throughout England and Canada and collaborated on the occasional song. James Keelaghan and Jez Lowe will perform two forty-five minute sets accompanying each other, November 11, at the Unitarian. Hall, 1310 Bertram St. Kelowna, BC. Tickets: $40 plus fees.

Craig and Deb Milton of Summerland, BC have hosted many great folk and roots music artists over the years at their home ("An Evening In The Valley"). They have provided a truly engaging and warm concert experience for both artists and audiences. In addition, they have attended several Kelowna Folk Roots concerts and we appreciate their support. Tragically, Craig and Deb lost their home in the Bald Range Wildfire along with many others and our hearts go out to all of them.
